My Journey to Better Breathing: Overcoming Asthma at 53

Asthma Smart patient Lisa shares her story.

I was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 53, and it took time for me to accept that this condition could develop at any stage in life. My doctor emphasised the importance of following an Asthma Management Plan (AMP), which became crucial for my health.

Growing up on the coast, I had never experienced respiratory issues. However, after moving to Canberra for work, I developed chronic sinusitis about seven years later. The dry climate, coupled with allergens like ryegrass, contributed to a high incidence of respiratory complaints in the area.

Upon retiring and moving back to Wollongong, I found myself grappling with chronic post-nasal drip, frequent nosebleeds from nasal irritation, and persistent nose blowing. I was relying on prescribed asthma medication daily, including 400mg of Pulmicort, as part of my AMP. I also used Ventolin during episodes when I struggled to catch my breath—typically triggered by stress, prolonged exposure to air conditioning, or illness. For me, asthma was primarily virus-induced, not allergy or environmentally triggered.

Before leaving Wollongong, I had heard of the success of Dr. James’ nose-breathing training, so it felt serendipitous to meet Maureen shortly after my return. At that point, I was chronically tired due to poor sleep quality and using my preventer without fully understanding its necessity. I often found myself breathing through one nostril or even my mouth, especially at night, feeling every bit of my 61 years.

To my surprise, I realised how shallow and mouth-focused my breathing had become. The idea of using a massage-based treatment alongside behavioural training to promote effective nose breathing resonated deeply with me. I had been under-utilising my lung capacity, unaware that my breathing patterns were negatively affecting my health.

After undergoing the treatment and committing to the breathing exercise program, I experienced significant improvements. I began sleeping better, had more energy, and learned to manage my stress rather than allowing it to overwhelm me. I felt revitalised—better than I had in years.

It’s never too late to learn how to breathe effectively. Breathing is fundamental to our wellbeing, yet it’s often overlooked because we do it automatically, without thought. By prioritising correct nose-breathing techniques, I have taken responsibility for my respiratory health. This shift has directly contributed to improvements in my sleep quality, energy levels, and overall sense of wellness.

Moreover, I now have the confidence to reduce my reliance on the daily use of an asthma preventer, reserving it only for when I contract a respiratory virus. I’ve not had to use Ventolin at all, even during illnesses, as I have not experienced any breathing difficulties.

I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. James’s technique for modifying behaviour around nose breathing and endorse Maureen Lavis as a practitioner. She has truly made a positive difference in my quality of life.
